Abstract
Human resources, as the most value-creating and strategic capital of any organization, constitute the very foundation for the formation, survival, and excellence of the organization. Therefore, achieving sustainable success in organizations necessitates the appointment of competent and qualified individuals to positions and organizational roles that align with their capabilities. Accordingly, the aim of the present study was to identify and classify the competencies of sports managers in universities. The research method was applied in terms of purpose and qualitative in terms of execution. Two instruments were used for data collection: a review of library documents and literature related to sports manager competencies, and semi-structured interviews. The participants included executive managers and sports practitioners within universities, sports specialists, professors, and expert opinion leaders in the fields of university administration and sports management. Sampling was conducted using purposive and snowball sampling methods. After extracting the themes, the research results were sent to six of the interviewed experts and professors to confirm the process of naming and categorizing the initial, sub-, and main themes, which attests to the credibility of the findings. The research findings indicate that a set of nine main components or themes influence the competency of sports managers in universities. These themes include: general and basic competencies, cognitive competency, technical competency, task competency, intervening conditions competency, interpersonal competency, specialized and core competency, managerial competency, and mental competency. The procedure employed in this research provides a comprehensive framework of the competencies required by university sports managers, which can serve as a basis for their selection and evaluation.
